I new that this time around was going to be more of the same. Huge line, no service, no inventory, horrible customer service, etc...AT&T couldn't get it right the first time, what makes you think they would get it right the second time around ? I think if you never had an iPhone maybe go through the trouble, but if you already have one, why go through the headache for another one. Makes no sense. Apple always launches news products with very low inventory to create excitement and demand. I did it once with the mini me, and never again. I can wait, if I really want an Apple Anything.

I watched one of your streaming videos "live" it was quite a powerful realization. Wow, she's streaming from InWorld, I thought.

I observed a similar but reversed event last week at the Discovery Networks weekly workshop. Demb Oh (Steme Dembo) gave a demonstration of streaming into SL from the RealWorld! This blew me away, it's something I'm hoping to recreate as soon as I can find some time.

Anyhow, one of the neat things Demb Oh did was stream his computer desktop to InWorld. Rather than poining a camera at his screen he used a piece of software (Windows only) called SplitCam.

Using Veodia to create the stream, he was then able to use the SplitCam application to alternate video source between his webcam and his desktop. I imagine Qik has a similar functionality to allow for such switching. This may or not be something you'd be interested in exploring - seems you'd at least not have to contend with the camera while streaming out what's happening on your computer.

If I ever record a podcast again, I hope to discuss the great experimentation by both you and Demb Oh. Each of you, from slightly different angles, apre pushing/pulling the envelope of using SL as a media tool.

Really appreciate the feedback Scott, thanks for that! I am shopping around for a video camera for work at the moment-- the one I'm using is my personal video camera. As I think there is going to be a lot more call for video at education.au in future -- it would be nice to have more flexibility.

That new Edirol does look rather sexy, doesn't it? My biggest gripe with the current model is that you can't audit the true audio being laid down - you are only listening to what's going in.

Really need to catch up for a chat about podcasting. I've got to find ways to be more efficient with the time I've got.

Cheers

Thanks for the follow-up report on your day in the field. This was a fascinating read.

Live video streaming from a cell-phone is so mind-boggling to imagine. Sure there were a few glitches, that's the way it has to be.

I'm very concerned to learn that there is a new Edirol hand held recorder. Thanks for the tip and link. Thanks for giving me one more device to long for.

As for video cameras. I've been using a Sanyo Xacti HD1A for more than a year (though not in such demanding circumstances). It's expandable SD memory card system and audio input jack make it an attractive option. Newer models have since come out - though they tend to be pricey in Tokyo.

My biggest concern would be the glue which bonds the nut to the plastic case. If something were to give way under stress, seems this might be it.

Seems like this would make for a great DIY video tutorial. Any chance to get your dad or hubby to lend a hand again?

It will be very interesting to see how this rig performs under field conditions. Please keep us posted.
